10 Days to Financial Security

A free email challenge: one small, doable money step a day, for 10 days.

Each email takes a few minutes to read and gives you one thing to do that day. It is free, and you can leave any time with one click.

The 10 days

  1. Day 1: See where your money goes. Write down every dollar you spend for a few days, or look back at last month in your bank app. No judging, just noticing.
  2. Day 2: Take a snapshot of what you own and owe. List your accounts, your debts and their balances. Our free net worth calculator does the math.
  3. Day 3: Make a simple spending plan. Split your take-home pay into needs, wants and saving. Start with a rough plan you can keep.
  4. Day 4: Start a starter emergency fund. Pick a small first target and set up an automatic transfer, even a few dollars a week.
  5. Day 5: Check your credit reports. You can get your credit reports free from the three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for anything you do not recognize.
  6. Day 6: List your debts and pick an order. Write down each balance, rate and minimum payment, then choose which one gets extra money first.
  7. Day 7: Cut one cost that repeats. Find one subscription, fee or bill you can cancel, lower or switch.
  8. Day 8: Check your bank accounts. Look at fees, interest and whether your bank is FDIC-insured.
  9. Day 9: Look at your retirement saving. Find out what you save now, and whether your job offers a retirement plan or a match.
  10. Day 10: Set your next 90 days. Pick one or two small goals for the next three months and put a reminder on your calendar.
